15 Christmas party games

1. The Christmas quiz

The one game everyone can play at once. Split into teams, give yourselves festive team names, and play rounds on films, music, food and traditions. Start with our free Christmas quiz, or host Christmas Quiz Night on the TV while everyone answers on their phones.

2. The chocolate game

A bar of chocolate, a knife and fork, and a hat, scarf and gloves in the middle of the table. Take turns to roll a die; roll a six, put everything on and eat as much chocolate as you can with the knife and fork before someone else rolls a six.

3. Christmas charades

Write Christmas films, songs and characters on slips of paper and act them out in teams against a one-minute timer. "Die Hard" is always harder than it sounds.

4. Emoji quiz

Christmas films and songs told in emoji. Show them on the TV and race to name them. Our free Christmas emoji quiz has twenty ready to go.

5. Finish the lyric

Play the first line of a Christmas song and stop the music: first to sing the next line wins the point. Our Christmas music quiz has questions for a whole round.

6. White elephant present swap

Everyone brings a wrapped gift under a set budget. Draw numbers; on your turn, open a gift or steal one already opened. The best gifts change hands three or four times.

7. Pass the parcel

A prize wrapped in layers, with a sweet, a forfeit or a Christmas question between each one. Works for every age, and grown-ups secretly love it.

8. Who am I?

Stick a Christmas character on everyone's forehead (Rudolph, the Grinch, Mrs Claus) and take turns asking yes-or-no questions to work out who you are.

9. Snowman wrap

Teams race to turn one player into a snowman using only toilet roll. Add a carrot nose and a scarf for style points.

10. Christmas picture round

Close-ups and silhouettes of Christmas objects: guess what they are. Print our free picture round or show it on screen.

11. Christmas Pictionary

Draw festive words against the clock on a big pad or a whiteboard. Mince pie, sleigh bells and Brussels sprouts are all harder to draw than you'd think.

12. Reindeer ring toss

One player wears a pair of antlers; the others throw inflatable rings to land on them. Best of five wins a mince pie.

13. Christmas bingo

Fill cards with things that happen every Christmas ("Someone falls asleep", "Someone mentions the King's speech", "Paper crown worn at dinner") and tick them off through the day.

14. Minute to win it

Quick-fire challenges with a 60-second timer: stack a tower of plastic cups, move a biscuit from forehead to mouth with no hands, or unwrap a present wearing oven gloves.

15. Family quiz: grown-ups vs kids

Pair each question for the adults with one for the children, so everyone can play fairly. The Family Quiz does it for you, with a grown-ups question and a kids question on every topic, and our free family Christmas quiz is pitched so kids can join in.

Planning tip: start with something quick and silly (2 or 8), save the quiz for after dinner when everyone's settled, and keep the chocolate game for when energy dips.

Questions

What are the best Christmas party games for adults?

A Christmas quiz is the easy winner because everyone can play at once. After that, the chocolate game, charades, Christmas song lyrics and a white elephant present swap always get people laughing.

What games can a whole family play at Christmas?

Pick games that mix knowledge and luck: a family quiz with questions for grown-ups and kids, pass the parcel, Christmas charades and "Who am I?" with sticky notes all work across ages.

How do you play the chocolate game?

Put a bar of chocolate, a knife and fork, a hat, scarf and gloves in the middle. Take turns to roll a die; whoever rolls a six puts on the hat, scarf and gloves and tries to eat the chocolate with the knife and fork until someone else rolls a six.

Can we play a Christmas quiz on our phones?

Yes. Host one of our Christmas quizzes on your TV or laptop and everyone joins on their phone with a QR code, answers against the clock, and watches the leaderboard after every round. No app needed.

How long should Christmas party games last?

Plan two or three short games and one bigger one, like a quiz, for an evening. A 30-question Christmas quiz takes about 45 minutes; a full Christmas Quiz Night is closer to two hours.
